About Dampier Salt

Since the first shipment of 19,000 tonnes in April 1972 to Central Glass in Japan annual sales of salt from Dampier Salt have increased from one million to four million tonnes per year at the Dampier operation. The company's capacity was further increased with the purchase of the Lake MacLeod operation in 1978 and the Port Hedland operation in 2001. In 2004 the annual production capacity is nine million tonnes.

Dampier Salt maintains its market leadership by careful attention to the four key business drivers:

  • Reliability quality value for money and sustainability
  • Reliable supply through high engineering standards inventory management and shipping
  • Quality product through careful attention to process and quality control
  • Value for money

The business strategy focuses on three separate operations which consistently deliver high quality salt suitable to customers' needs. These operations provide flexibility of shipping scheduling and offer customers greater security because of the reduced risk of delivery interruption. The operations also provide greater utilization of equipment people and associated infrastructure which enables Dampier Salt to be a competitive supplier.

In 1997, Dampier Salt also commissioned a 1.5 million tonnes per year Gypsum operation at Lake MacLeod which provides high quality natural gypsum to the wallboard plaster cement and agriculture markets in Africa Asia and Australia. This business further improved Dampier Salt's competitiveness. Our people are experienced trained and dedicated to meeting customer requirements and ensuring continuous improvement in areas of quality costs and reliability to meet changing customer needs.
