Engineers Australia is proud to announce that 2011 is the Year of Humanitarian Engineering

As the current Project Director and lead engineer for the SUCCESS International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Compliance Project, Ryan deals with a vast number of complex engineering issues.
The IMO project primarily involves the installation of a second hull inside the Royal Australian Navy tanker, HMAS SUCCESS. This will separate the fuel oil she carries from her external hull. Considering the number of interfacing systems, the condition of the aging equipment, and the number of risks to people, assets and the environment, it’s a complex project.
To improve this valuable asset as quickly and cheaply as possible, Ryan has focused on driving engineering decisions down to lower levels (as risk has allowed), giving the team the tools required to apply their own expertise effectively.
He’s grateful for having such a strong team of excellent engineers and technicians, who have generated many simple yet brilliant engineering solutions and saved millions of dollars – sometimes with only a few seconds of expert, well-directed thought.
“I think this sums up great engineering. As the lead engineer of a great team, I have simply asked pragmatic questions and provided pragmatic direction – and great things have happened,” says Ryan.
