Water Reuse in Alice

This innovative project is a joint initiative between Power and Water Corporation and CSIRO to make the best use of valuable water resources in Alice Springs and reduce wastewater overflows.

Reclaimed water from wastewater stabilisation ponds undergoes further treatment by Dissolved Air Flotation before being pumped 6.2km to Soil Aquifer Treatment Basins.

The Basins are used to recharge an underlying aquifer where the recycled water is “banked” for future extraction and beneficial reuse.

The benefits of using SAT include:

- using natural filtration processes to increase treatment

- reducing water losses through evaporation

- no mosquito breeding

- water is banked until required.
